For millennia, shepherds used these dogs to protect livestock in the Caucasus Mountains. Ovcharkas are large, reaching 220 pounds for males (females up to 180), with lifespans up to twelve years. The American Kennel Club notes their bold, protective nature requires respect. Some claim an Ovcharka can stand up to a wolf, but their strong will demands thorough training to prevent conflicts.
