While some pre-Incan peoples ate these dogs, the Incas deemed them sacred and forbade their consumption. Their images appear on Andean ceramics and Moche vessels. According to The New York Times, Peruvian Hairless Dogs live 11–12 years, weigh up to 26 pounds, and stand 16–20 inches tall. Lively, affectionate, and alert, they remain a proud cultural icon of Peru.
