The Bulldog is a muscular breed with a wrinkled face and pushed-in nose. Emerging in the 1600s, Bulldogs can weigh up to 50 pounds. They appeared in 1700s art, including Philip Reinagle’s famed Bulldog painting.

Originally bred for bull-baiting, they developed powerful jaws and stocky builds. After the sport was banned, Bulldogs transitioned to beloved companions. They live 8–10 years. Friendly and comical yet stubborn, they can be challenging to train and prone to obesity. Because of common health issues, pet insurance is often advisable.
